Julia Stein is currently a member of Theater Erfurt where she delights press and audience alike with a mix of beauty of tone and intense stage presence.
Born in Oberhausen, Germany Ms. Stein started her studies with Professor Josef Görgen at the Cologne music conservatory. She worked with Robert Kettelson in Milan and Alida Ferrarini in Verona when she was completing her Masters in Psychology at the University of Padova. Back in Germany she first worked with Helen Donath and later on with Camilla Ueberschaer at the "Voice Studio Munich".
Ms. Stein attended among others Masterclasses with Kammersängerin Brigitte Fassbaender, KS Vesselina Kasarova, Michelle Breedt and Dietrich Henschel. She was awarded several prizes at international singing competitions - the most recent ones being the third prize and special prize in the “Accademia Belcanto Competition Graz” with KS Angelika Kirchschlager in the Jury.
First engagements took her to Salzburger Landestheater and Stadttheater Klagenfurt where she appeared as Second Lady in Mozart's Zauberflöte and later on as Balkis in La Rencontre imprévue as part of the 5th International Opera Festival Istanbul.
Soon after engagements followed that took her to prestigious stages as the Bavarian State Opera and Bucharest State Opera - where she had her successful debut in the role of Siébel in the opera Faust by Gounod and Basel Opera house where she performed again as Second Lady.
As a cover for Valer Barna-Sabadus she made a first-time appearance in baroque repertoire at Theater Gießen as Nerone in Agrippina to which she later on returned in the leading roles of Savitri by Gustav Holst and Death knocks by Christian Jost. She has performed in numerous baroque operas, among others the title role in Xerxes at Theater Bielefeld and Opernfestspiele Immling.
Concerts have taken Julia Stein among other venues to Tonhalle Zürich and Accademia delle Crete Senesi - Philippe Herreweghe's music festival in Asciano, Tuscany.
Ms. Stein has worked with conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Michael Hofstetter, Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, Yannis Pouspourikas, Joana Mallwitz, Axel Kober, Thomas Rösner and others.
Current roles include the title role in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, Néris in Médée by Cherubini and Stéphano in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette.
In summer 2018 Ms. Stein will give her debut in the role of Carmen at the Domstufen-Festspiele Erfurt in a new production by Guy Montavon.
